Your credit report contains information on:
- where you live, whether you own your home, and how often you've moved
- how you pay your bills
- how much credit you have
- what types of credit you have
- whether you’ve been sued, arrested, or filed for bankruptcy
Many businesses report this information to the credit bureaus on a monthly basis, and the credit bureaus sell the information to:
- lenders
- credit card companies
- insurance companies
- employers
- landlords
- other businesses
These businesses use this information to determine whether they want to:
- lend you money
- extend you credit
- issue an insurance policy to you
- rent you a house or apartment
- hire you as an employee
The information in your credit report also determines the interest rate you'll receive on loans and credit cards and the premiums you'll pay on various types of insurance.
You should obtain your credit report from each of the nationwide credit bureaus because your creditors may not report to all three, so the information in each of your reports may vary. There are three nationwide credit bureaus:
- Equifax
800-685-1111
- Experian
888-397-3742
- Trans Union
800-916-8800
